Chapter 3 - Midnight at the Penthouse

At 11:30 PM that evening, inside the four-bedroom duplex penthouse on Michigan Avenue that Evan had leased with corporate operational funds, the atmosphere was celebratory.
A magnum of vintage Cristal sat cooling in a silver ice bucket on the marble kitchen island. Barbara Whitmore sat on the white velvet sofa, holding an ice pack against her still-tender cheek while sipping champagne through a crystal flute.
“The audacity of that sterile little nobody!” Barbara hissed, her voice vibrating with venom. “To strike me in front of the press! Evan, when the court finishes processing the asset division, I want her barred from using the Whitmore name in public!”
Evan walked over from the balcony, swirling a snifter of cognac, loosening his silk tie with an arrogant smirk. “Mother, calm down. The divorce decree was signed. Under Illinois equitable distribution, my lawyers are filing a petition tomorrow claiming 50% executive goodwill of Whitmore Freight. I built this company into a $200 million regional juggernaut. Clara is walking away with her little trust fund allowance and nothing more.”
Kelsey stepped out from the master bedroom wearing a silk robe, holding her round belly with one hand and turning the three-carat diamond ring Clara had handed her under the chandelier light.
“Evan, honey,” Kelsey pouted, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Are you sure that ring is worth pawning? It feels like antique junk.”
“It’s worth at least eighty thousand, darling,” Evan chuckled, kissing her forehead. “Keep it as a trophy. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, I’m calling a full executive meeting to announce our engagement and expand our family expense accounts. Clara thought giving you that ring was an insult. By tomorrow afternoon, she’ll realize she handed you her throne.”
