Chapter 4 - Nine O'Clock at Whitmore Tower

Tuesday morning arrived with a biting chill in the downtown Loop.

At 8:45 AM, Evan’s black Porsche Cayenne pulled up to the valet stand in front of Whitmore Tower on Wacker Drive. Evan stepped out wearing a tailored navy three-piece suit, his gold cufflinks catching the morning sun. Behind him, Barbara stepped out of an Uber, wearing a sable fur coat and dark designer sunglasses to conceal the slight swelling near her cheekbone.

“I want the board to see me present,” Barbara declared loudly as they walked through the revolving glass doors. “I want everyone to know the Whitmore family is united.”

“Don't worry, Mother,” Evan smiled, walking toward the private executive elevators. “Today is the day we officially purge Clara’s remaining loyalists from the payroll.”

He pulled his black titanium executive keycard from his wallet and swiped it against the optical reader for the private express elevator to the 40th-floor boardroom.

The reader beeped three times with a harsh, high-pitched error tone:

ACCESS DENIED — CREDENTIALS REVOKED BY TRUST ADMINISTRATOR.

Evan frowned, tapping the card harder against the sensor. “What is wrong with this stupid scanner?”

He tried a second time. The indicator flashed bright crimson.

“Mr. Whitmore,” a calm, deep voice spoke from behind them.

Evan turned around to find Chief of Corporate Security Thomas Kane standing with two armed building officers in crisp black uniforms.

“Thomas, reset the executive lift immediately,” Evan commanded sharply. “I have an emergency board meeting in twelve minutes.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Whitmore,” Officer Kane replied without flinching. “By direct written order of the Board of Trustees, your security credentials, building access, and parking privileges were suspended at 8:00 AM. If you wish to attend the shareholder meeting, you must surrender your corporate phone and proceed via the public service elevator under escort.”
