Chapter 8 - The Mistress's Quick Departure

While the board meeting proceeded upstairs, the fallout was already moving swiftly through the city.
At 10:15 AM, two uniformed Cook County process servers and a private bailiff arrived at Unit 18B of the luxury River North Glass Towers—the high-rise condo where Kelsey Adams was busy unpacking designer baby clothes.
When Kelsey opened the door holding a cup of decaf latte, the bailiff handed her an emergency judicial writ of Lis Pendens and an immediate asset seizure summons.
“What is this?” Kelsey asked, her voice shrill with confusion.
“Miss Adams, this residential property was purchased using $420,000 in embezzled corporate funds from Whitmore Freight,” the bailiff explained. “A judicial freeze has been placed on the title. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises before federal marshals padlock the doors.”
Kelsey dropped her latte onto the hardwood floor, screaming in panic. She frantically pulled out her phone and called Evan.
Evan answered from the boardroom hallway, his voice broken and sobbing. “Kelsey... they took everything... the accounts are frozen... the police are here...”
“What about the penthouse? What about my allowance?!” Kelsey shrieked into the receiver.
“I have no money, Kelsey! My personal accounts are locked! I’m being arrested!”
Kelsey’s expression transformed in an instant from pampered socialite to icy calculation.
“You pathetic loser,” Kelsey hissed into the phone. “You told me you owned the company! You told me you were worth fifty million!”
“Kelsey, please! Think of our baby!” Evan cried.
“I’m calling my mother in Florida,” Kelsey snapped. “Don't you ever call this number again.”

She hung up, threw her suitcases onto the bed, and began furiously packing whatever designer handbags and coats she could carry before the marshals returned.
On the dresser sat the antique diamond ring Clara had handed her on the courthouse steps. Kelsey grabbed it, jammed it into her purse, and rushed out the door—finally understanding that the pawn shop Clara mentioned was the only place left for her to go.
