Chapter 8 - THE NURSE WHO WOULDN'T BE BOUGHT

Declan offered Mave five hundred thousand dollars.
She stared.
“What?”
“Take it. Leave the city.”
“Why?”
“Because Ethan knows you're involved.”
Mave crossed her arms.
“So?”
“So you're in danger.”
She looked at him.
“Then call the authorities.”
Declan sighed.
“Mave—”
“No.”
He stared.
She continued.
“I didn't come here to become part of your family war.”
“I know.”
“And I won't take money to disappear.”
Declan's expression changed.
“You're refusing half a million dollars?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Mave swallowed.
“Because I spent my whole life watching people with money decide what happened to people without it.”
Her eyes filled.
“I won't let you do that to me.”
Declan looked at her.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
She blinked.
“Okay?”
“Yes.”
He leaned back.
“I'll call the authorities.”
Mave stared.
“Really?”
Declan smiled sadly.
“You're very difficult to argue with.”

She laughed.
“That's what my mother used to say.”
