Chapter 2 - THE RULE SHE BROKE AT MIDNIGHT

At midnight, Mave broke the first rule.

Not the rule about photographs.

Not the rule about locked rooms.

The rule about asking questions.

Declan had finally fallen into an uneasy sleep after receiving appropriate treatment.

His fever was still being monitored.

Mave sat beside the window, reviewing his medical chart.

Something bothered her.

The shooting had occurred twelve days earlier.

Declan had been injured outside a private warehouse.

The official report described an attempted robbery.

But his medical records told a different story.

Two gunshot wounds.

One abdominal.

One near the shoulder.

The trajectory suggested he had been shot from behind.

Mave frowned.

A robbery?

Maybe.

But the injuries didn't fit the version she'd been told.

She looked toward the bed.

Declan slept with one hand curled around the blanket.

Even unconscious, his face was tense.

She thought about his words.

Not while they're waiting for me to close my eyes.

Then she looked at the security camera above the bedroom door.

A small red light blinked.

Someone was watching.

Mave stood.

She walked to the door.

Tommy was in the hallway.

“Who monitors that camera?”

He frowned.

“Security.”

“Who specifically?”

“Why?”

“Because your boss is afraid someone will kill him while he sleeps.”

Tommy's expression changed.

Mave lowered her voice.

“And I want to know whether the person watching him is the same person he's afraid of.”

May you like

Tommy stared at her.

Then whispered, “Come with me.”
