Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN IN THE HOSPITAL PHOTOGRAPH
Three days later, Mave discovered the photograph.
It was tucked inside an old medical folder.
A young woman stood beside Declan in a hospital corridor.
She had dark hair.
A bright smile.
And a name badge clipped to her uniform.
Nora Hayes, RN.
Mave stared.
Declan's surname.
A nurse.
She turned the photograph over.
On the back, someone had written:
For my brother. Stop pretending you're invincible. Love, Nora.
Mave looked toward Declan.
He was sitting by the window.
“Who's Nora?”
His entire body went still.
Slowly, he turned.
“Where did you hear that name?”
Mave held up the photograph.
“It was in your medical folder.”
Declan's face drained.
“Put it away.”
She immediately lowered it.
“I'm sorry.”
He looked toward the window.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then whispered, “My sister.”
Mave's heart tightened.
“Is she—”
“Dead.”
Silence.
Declan swallowed.
“She was a nurse.”
Mave looked at the photograph.
“What happened?”
Declan closed his eyes.
“She died trying to save someone.”
