Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT THE CAMERAS WENT DARK
The first attack came at 2:13 A.M.
Mave was checking Declan's vital signs when the security camera above the door stopped blinking.
She noticed immediately.
Then the hallway lights went out.
A soft click sounded near the door.
Mave froze.
Declan opened his eyes.
“What's wrong?”
She lowered her voice.
“The camera just went off.”
His expression changed.
“Get down.”
Mave crouched beside the bed.
Footsteps approached.
Then stopped.
Someone tested the door handle.
Locked.
A second later, metal scraped against the lock.
Declan reached for the bedside phone.
Mave shook her head.
“Don't move.”
He stared at her.
She pressed the emergency alarm.
Nothing happened.
The system was dead.
Then a voice came through the door.
“Declan?”
Mave recognized it.
Ethan Hayes.
Declan's brother.
His expression hardened.
“Ethan.”
The voice came again.
“Open the door.”
Mave looked at Declan.
He shook his head.
