Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND THE SHOOTING
Declan finally told Mave the truth.
The shooting had occurred after he discovered suspicious transfers from one of his companies.
Millions of dollars had disappeared.
The money moved through accounts controlled by Ethan.
Declan confronted him.
Ethan denied everything.
Three days later, Declan was ambushed.
Two men opened fire as he left a warehouse.
His driver died.
Declan survived only because Tommy reached him before the attackers returned.
Mave listened quietly.
When Declan finished, she looked at him.
“Then call the police.”
Declan laughed bitterly.
“You don't understand my world.”
“Then explain it.”
He stared.
Mave continued.
“You're lying in a bed with bullet wounds because your brother wants your money.”
Declan's jaw tightened.
“And?”
“And you're still protecting the system that made him think murder was a business decision.”
Silence.
Declan looked away.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
Then whispered, “Nora used to say things like that.”
Mave's expression softened.
“Maybe she was right.”
