Chapter 5 - The Mistress's Diamond Ring

That evening, Richard took Vanessa to an exclusive fine-dining restaurant in Tribeca to celebrate his anticipated corporate triumph.
Vanessa wore an emerald silk backless gown, flaunting a three-carat diamond ring that Richard had purchased using his company’s emergency payroll credit line.
"To the future Mrs. Vance," Richard toasted, clinking his champagne flute against hers. "Once the Sterling loan clears tomorrow, I'm filing the expedited divorce papers. Maya will get minimum child support and zero alimony. You get the Hamptons estate."
Vanessa purred, leaning across the candlelit table to kiss his cheek. "You're so generous, Richard. That little waitress never appreciated the man you are. She was so boring, so plain... she didn't know how to shine next to a king."
"She was a placeholder, baby," Richard laughed. "A servant who took care of the house until I found someone worthy of my status."
Across the dining room, sitting in a secluded private alcove behind sheer linen drapes, sat Maya.
She had shed the faded jeans and oversized cardigan. Dressed in a bespoke midnight-navy Givenchy suit, her hair styled into an elegant, sweeping chignon, she looked magnificent. On her hand, the silver orchid ring caught the ambient chandelier glow with blinding brilliance.
Beside her sat Julian Sterling, looking at her with genuine, profound reverence.
"They have no idea, do they?" Julian murmured, nodding subtly toward Richard’s table.
"Richard has never looked at anything in his life beyond his own reflection in the mirror," Maya replied in a calm, clear voice that held neither anger nor sorrow—only absolute, crystalline justice.
"Our legal teams have completed the foreclosure package," Julian said, sliding a gold-embossed leather binder into her hands. "Every asset, every bank account, and every debt note tied to the Vance family is indexed here. The moment you step into that boardroom tomorrow, Richard Vance ceases to exist in the corporate world."

Maya looked at the photograph of her daughter Lily resting inside her phone case.
"Let him have his champagne tonight," Maya said softly. "Tomorrow, he pays for every tear my daughter cried."
