Chapter 4 - The Viral Video Trap

By noon, the twenty-second video Vanessa had posted had accumulated over two million views on social media.

Commenters were viciously debating the clip:

‘How can a husband do that to his wife in front of their child?!’

‘She looks so broken... someone help that poor little girl.’

‘Classic toxic family. The mother-in-law laughing in the background is sickening.’

Inside his corporate office in Melville, Long Island, Richard Vance was completely oblivious to the impending storm. He sat with his feet kicked up on his mahogany desk, smoking a cigar, laughing on speakerphone with his business partner, Greg.

"I told you, man!" Richard bragged, blowing a cloud of smoke toward the ceiling. "You have to show these women who runs the house early on! Maya won't last three days in a cheap motel. She’ll come crawling back on her knees, begging for grocery money, and then she’ll sign the house refinancing papers without a single peep!"

"What about the viral video?" Greg asked nervously. "People are tagging our company's corporate page, Richard. Some clients are asking if you’re the guy in the clip."

"Let them talk!" Richard scoffed. "Bad publicity is still publicity. In two days, Sterling Global approves our $12 million expansion loan, and I’ll be buying a four-story townhouse in the Hamptons. Maya can stay in the guest room and wash Vanessa’s laundry."

At that moment, his mother Olivia burst into the office wearing a gaudy leopard-print coat, looking agitated.

I MARRIED MY SISTER'S BLIND MAFIA FIANCÉ—BUT HE COULD SEE EVERYTHING

"She Touched the Mafia Boss at His Wedding—But His Bride Wasn't Prepared for How He Reacted The first time Valentina Rourke understood that another woman believed she belonged at her husband's side, she was still in her wedding gown, still holding a glass of champagne she had not drunk from, and still smiling at a man she would later describe to no one as the reason she nearly walked out of her own reception. It was not later. It was not after the flowers died in the trash bins behind the catering tent, not after the photographs were sealed into an album she would not open for a year, not after the honeymoon, not after the small cuts that came afterward, the ones delivered so politely that she needed a week to notice she was bleeding. It was at the reception, beneath a ceiling strung with white roses and warm gold light, while two hundred people pretended not to watch Alesandra Voss put her hand flat against Declan Rourke's chest. The gesture took less than two seconds. That was what made it obscene. Two seconds was enough time to be casual about it, enough time to look accidental, enough time for a woman to say afterward, if anyone asked, what? I was only congratulating him. But Valentina had grown up in a family where a man's hand moving two inches toward his jacket meant something, and she knew the difference between a gesture that happened and a gesture that was placed. Alesandra placed it. Palm flat. Fingers slightly spread. Right over the pocket where a man kept the thing closest to his heart. And Declan did not step back. That was the detail that entered Valentina like a splinter of glass. Not the hand. The absence of the step back. She had known Alesandra for five weeks. Five weeks, and the woman had already managed to be present at the cake tasting, the seating meeting, the florist, and one extremely long Tuesday afternoon during which she had explained, in a tone of patient expertise, why the Rourke family did not use lilies at weddings. His mother hated them, Alesandra had said, and then she had smiled at Valentina with her hands folded and her diamonds small enough to suggest taste. Five weeks. Declan had known her for twelve years. Valentina set her champagne down on the table beside her bouquet, and the glass made a small clean sound, and nobody heard it over the string quartet. She was aware, in that moment, of her own body in a way she had not been all day. The gown was deep ivory silk, cut close through the waist and full through the hips, with lace sleeves that ended just below the elbow because she had refused the version that covered her arms entirely. Her collarbone was bare. Her mouth was painted a red she had chosen herself, because no one had ever picked a shade for her correctly in her life. She was five foot seven and built like a woman who ate, and she had walked down the aisle of St. Brendan's Cathedral that morning with her chin level and her bouquet held low, and she had heard the whispers, and she had refused to hear them. Her grandmother, on her mother's side, had once told her: You walk into a room like you've already forgiven it for underestimating you. Valentina had been nineteen then, home from college for a summer, and she had not understood what the old woman meant. She understood now. Forgiveness, in the family she came from, was not softness. It was the decision to be gracious to people who had already decided what you were worth, and to do it while making sure they never forgot the favor. She had worn that forgiveness all morning. She was wearing it now. But Alesandra's hand was still on his chest, and the forgiveness was thinning. Valentina looked around the ballroom. It was the Rourke estate in Bellhaven, a stone house older than most of the city's institutions, its long gallery opened out into a ballroom for the occasion, white roses climbing the pillars, candles floating in wide glass bowls, tables dressed in linen and crystal. Men who had, at various points in their lives, ordered terrible things to be done to other men were now dabbing their mouths with napkins and discussing, with genuine passion, whether the salmon had been overcooked. Women in dresses that cost more than a car leaned together and counted alliances over dessert. Near the doors, two men in dark suits stood very still, their hands loose at their sides, their eyes moving. The music had shifted to something slower. The first dance had ended an hour ago. Declan had held her carefully then, as though she were a question he was afraid of answering wrong, and she had leaned close enough to say, into his ear, I'm not made of glass, Declan. And his hand had settled more firmly at her waist, present rather than possessive, and for four minutes beneath the chandeliers she had let herself believe that this arrangement might become something she could live inside. Now Alesandra was crossing the floor. She did not hurry. That was the thing. She moved through the crowd as if the crowd should part for her, and it did, because it always had, because twelve years of proximity to power teaches people to make room. She wore silver silk, an unbroken column of it from shoulder to floor, with a single strand of diamonds at her throat. Her hair was dark and fell in waves she had certainly not woken up with. She was tall and narrow and so polished she seemed sharpened, and every person she passed adjusted their posture slightly, the way people do around someone who matters. She stopped in front of Declan. She did not look at Valentina. That was the first insult, and it was so clean that it took Valentina a moment to feel it. ""You owe me a dance,"" Alesandra said. Her voice carried. Not loudly. Just enough. The people at the nearest tables heard, and then the people at the tables behind them heard because of how the first group had gone quiet, and then the whole side of the ballroom knew, the way rooms like that always know. Declan looked down at her hand on his arm. Then at her face. And Valentina, standing four feet away with her bouquet resting against the table and one hand still on the stem of her glass, watched her husband hesitate. It was not long. Later, when she replayed it, she would decide it was somewhere between one and two seconds. A breath and a half. Not an eternity. Not even close to an eternity. But she had spent her life learning to read the space before a man answered, and she saw it: the brief downward pull at the corner of his mouth, the way his eyes moved to her, to Valentina, and then back, and then — this was the part that mattered — did not move away. He knew. That was what she saw. He knew it was wrong. He knew the room was watching his wife stand alone. And for one breath and a half, he did nothing. Alesandra took that breath and turned it into a country. Before Declan could refuse her or accept her, she stepped closer. Her other hand came up to his shoulder. She turned him half a step toward the floor. The movement was not seductive, exactly, which was what made it worse. It was familiar. It was the way you touched a man you had touched a thousand times, in rooms with worse lighting, in years Valentina had not been present for. The guests shifted. Someone at the far table laughed, then stopped. A woman near the orchestra pit looked down at her plate. An older man with gray hair and a face like a closed fist looked at Valentina with something she recognized and hated. Pity. Pity was uglier than mockery. Mockery challenged you. Pity buried you. ""Only one dance,"" Alesandra murmured, and the way she said it made it sound like a memory, a secret, a place Valentina could not follow. Declan's jaw tightened. He looked over Alesandra's shoulder, at his wife, and Valentina held his eyes and did nothing. She did not move toward them. She did not call out. She had grown up in a family where the loudest person in the room was usually the one losing, and she was not going to lose in public. Because she understood the arithmetic, even then, even with her chest going cold. If she walked over and demanded Alesandra step back, the room would call her insecure. If she cried, they would call her fragile. If she laughed, they would call her oblivious. If she left, they would say she could not handle the family. Every option on the table had been built to make her look like the problem. So she did the only thing that was left. She stood perfectly still, and she let them all see how long it took. The song began. Alesandra turned, and Declan turned with her, because her hand was on his shoulder and the room was watching and the alternative was a scene at his own wedding, and Valentina understood that too, and understanding it did not help. They moved into the first bars of the waltz. Declan did not hold her the way he had held Valentina. There was distance in his arms, tension in the line of his neck, a warning in the angle of his head. But from across a ballroom, distance did not matter. From across a ballroom, all anyone saw was the groom dancing with a beautiful woman in silver while his bride stood by the table with her flowers. Alesandra tilted her face up and said something that made Declan's eyes harden. Valentina could not hear it. She did not need to. She had watched her mother do this to a rival at a charity gala in 2011, and she had watched her aunt do it at a christening, and now she watched Alesandra Voss do it at her wedding, and she recognized the technique. Alesandra was not trying to seduce him. Seduction would have been simple, and simple things can be refused. Alesandra was reminding him. Every year before Valentina existed: the funerals, the emergencies, the nights spent in cars with the lights off, the secrets kept, the debts that had to be forgiven quietly because the alternative was worse. She was building a room out of memory and standing in the doorway of it, and she was letting the whole room see that the bride had not been given a key. Valentina watched her husband's face. She watched him listen. She watched him not smile. And she watched Alesandra lean in and say something else. Declan's hand closed around her wrist. It was not rough. He did not hurt her. But it was firm enough that her smile failed, and he stepped back from her, out of the dance, before the music had ended. The violinist stumbled slightly and covered it. The room went silent in that particular way rooms do when they are pretending not to be silent. Declan did not look around. He looked at Alesandra. ""Not tonight,"" he said. Alesandra blinked. ""I was only—"" ""Not tonight."" Two words, the second time, and they carried to the back of the room. Alesandra's face softened instantly, and it was a masterpiece of a face, wounded and graceful and utterly without guilt. ""Of course. Forgive me. I suppose I forgot how easily people misunderstand affection now."" Then she turned and looked at Valentina, and smiled as though the two of them were sharing a joke at the expense of the room. Valentina smiled back. It cost her something she could not name. She came from women who knew how to bleed without lowering their chin. Declan walked to her. Every step across that floor was louder to her than the music. When he reached her, he stopped, and he held out his hand, palm up. His hand was beautiful in a terrible way: wide, strong, knuckles marked with old scars, absolutely steady. It was the hand of a man who had signed things he would never discuss, and now it was waiting for his wife's permission. ""Dance with me,"" he said. The room held its breath. Valentina looked at his hand, and then at his face, and said, ""You already had your dance."" Something moved in his expression. She thought it might be surprise. She hoped, meanly, that it was. ""That was not a dance,"" he said. ""Then what was it?"" ""A mistake."" She wanted to believe him. That was the dangerous part. If she had not cared, the whole thing would have run off her like rain off marble, and she would have gone back to the cake and made a joke and been fine. But she did care. Somewhere between the altar and the first dance, between the way he had looked at her at the end of the aisle and the way he had said her name in the car, this man had made her want something from him. Not the money, not the house, not the name that made grown men lower their voices. She wanted the one thing he seemed to give almost no one. She wanted to be chosen clearly. Not eventually. Not privately. Not after another woman had tested the walls. ""People are watching,"" she said. ""I know."" ""That's not a reason."" He held her eyes. ""No. It isn't."" Then, quieter, so only she could hear: ""I'm asking. Not because of the room."" She put her hand in his, because pride was not the same as freedom, and because she was not done with him yet, and because some small stupid part of her wanted to feel whether his hand would be different now. It was. He held her closer from the start, his palm warm and certain at her back, his head lowered so his voice belonged to her alone. ""I should have stopped her sooner,"" he said. ""Yes."" ""I didn't want to embarrass her."" ""You embarrassed me instead."" A muscle moved along his jaw. ""That was not my intention."" ""Intentions are very comfortable places for men to hide."" He absorbed that without flinching. Around them the music softened and the watching faces blurred into candlelight and jewelry. For a moment there might have been any bride and groom having their first argument in a room full of flowers, except that a guest near the orchestra had a knife under his jacket, and two armed men stood at the doors, and the man holding her could make half the eastern seaboard quiet with one phone call, and had somehow failed to tell a woman no quickly enough. ""Alesandra is family,"" he said. Valentina almost laughed. It would have been easier if he had said something cruel. Cruelty could be answered cleanly. This was worse. He meant it. ""No,"" she said. ""She's a woman in love with you who has been allowed to call it loyalty because nobody wanted to make her uncomfortable."" His eyes darkened. ""You don't know her."" ""I know women. You met me five weeks ago and I understood her faster than you have in twelve years."" His steps slowed. She thought he would pull away. Instead he drew her a fraction closer, not to silence her but to keep the conversation from the room. ""Tell me what you think you saw."" Valentina looked over his shoulder. Alesandra stood by the champagne tower, accepting comfort from a silver-haired uncle, dabbing the corner of her eye with one finger, a woman wronged at someone else's wedding. Her head was bowed. But before it bowed, her eyes had gone to Declan. Once. Checking. Valentina turned back. ""I saw a woman who touched you before she asked. I saw a room that expected you to allow it. I saw you hesitate, because her feelings are old and mine are new. And I saw her enjoy the hesitation."" Declan said nothing. That silence frightened her more than an argument would have. Because somewhere under his loyalty, under twelve years of habit, something in him had heard her. She could see him thinking. She could see him going back through moments he had never questioned: a hand on his sleeve, a private joke interrupted, a warning about brides who wanted too much, an invitation changed without permission, a cream-colored dress at a family dinner that had looked bridal in every way except name, a silver dress at a wedding. The song ended. He did not release her. ""I married you today,"" he said. Valentina's throat tightened. ""Yes."" ""I know what vows mean."" His gaze did not move from hers. ""Do you know what boundaries mean?"" The question sat between them, soft and heavy. Before she could answer, the room began to applaud, because the music had stopped and the flowers were lovely and the food had cost a fortune, and in families like theirs people clapped hardest when something was about to break. Declan lifted her hand and kissed her knuckles. It should have comforted her. Across the room, Alesandra watched him do it with an expression so still it was almost peaceful. Later, long after the cake had been cut and the guests had begun leaving under a moon smeared with pale clouds, Valentina sat alone in the bridal suite while two maids worked the pins from her hair. Her scalp ached. Her cheeks ached. The gown, so beautiful at seven in the morning, had become a monument to pearls and engineering, and she was not sorry to see it go. Through the tall windows the estate spread out in dark gardens and old stone paths and guarded gates. Cars were still leaving. Somewhere below, Declan was probably in the west wing, finishing conversations with men who had waited all evening to speak to him without witnesses. And somewhere in this house, Alesandra Voss was not sleeping. The maids helped her out of the dress, hung it, and left. Valentina stood in front of the mirror in a silk robe and looked at herself without flattery. Her lipstick had worn off in the middle and stayed on at the edges. One curl had come loose against her cheek. Her body looked soft and tired and real under the silk, nothing like the polished thing that had walked down the aisle. She touched her back, where his hand had rested during the second dance. Then she heard voices in the hall. Declan's first, low and controlled. Alesandra's after, softer, hurt. Valentina did not move to the door. She stood where she was, barefoot on the cold floor, and listened, and did not pretend to herself that she wasn't. ""You punished me in front of everyone,"" Alesandra said. ""I stopped you in front of everyone."" A pause. ""She's turning you against me already."" Valentina closed her eyes. Declan did not answer quickly. That pause was nothing. A breath, a moment to choose a word. To a stranger it would have been invisible. To a bride standing barefoot in a room that smelled of roses and hairspray, it was enormous. When he spoke, his voice had changed. ""No one turns me against anyone. But you crossed a line tonight."" ""I danced with my oldest friend at his wedding."" ""You put your hand on another woman's husband without asking his wife."" Valentina's eyes opened. Alesandra laughed once. It cracked at the edge. ""Is that what she called it?"" ""That is what I am calling it."" Another silence, longer. Then Alesandra, so quietly that Valentina had to strain: ""You're really going to let her make me a stranger."" The way she said it. Wounded. Reasonable. The voice of a woman who had been loyal for a decade and was being repaid with exile. Valentina had heard that voice before, from an aunt who had borrowed money from her father and then wept when he asked for it back. ""Declan,"" Alesandra said. ""After everything. I kept your family alive."" ""I know what you did. I've never forgotten it. That's the only reason this conversation is happening in a hallway instead of a car."" The words landed like a door slamming in a distant wing. Valentina heard Alesandra's breath catch. ""You made yourself a stranger tonight,"" Declan said. ""I'm only telling you what you did."" Footsteps. One set, at first slow, then faster. A door farther down the corridor. Then quiet. A moment later, three knocks. Not a push, not an entrance. Knocks. Valentina looked at the door for a long moment before she said, ""Come in."" Declan entered and stopped just inside the room. He had taken off his jacket. His tie hung loose. For the first time all day he looked less like the head of a dynasty and more like a man who had discovered a war inside his own house before he had finished his champagne. His eyes moved over her face, and then he did the thing she had not expected: he looked at the floor for a full second, as though he needed to. ""Are you all right?"" he said. ""No."" The honesty seemed to hit him harder than tears. He closed the door behind him. He did not lock it. Valentina noticed that, and hated that she noticed it, and hated more that some part of her was glad. ""I spoke to Alesandra,"" he said. ""I heard."" His expression shifted. ""All of it?"" ""Enough."" He nodded slowly. ""Good. I'd rather you hear me correct it than hear only the mistake."" She looked at him. It was a clever answer, and possibly a sincere one. But sincerity did not erase humiliation, and cleverness did not build trust. Trust was not a vow spoken once in a cathedral with two hundred witnesses. Trust was smaller and harder. It was a hand removed before it had to be asked. It was a friend corrected before she became cruel. It was a husband who noticed when his wife went quiet at her own wedding. Declan took one step closer, and stopped. ""I failed you tonight,"" he said. Not decorated. Not defended. Valentina's anger loosened slightly, which almost made her angrier. ""Yes,"" she said. ""I won't do it again."" ""You probably will."" His brows drew together. She lifted one shoulder. ""Not because you want to. Because you still think the problem is what she did tonight. It isn't. The problem is what she's been allowed to become."" His face hardened — not at her, she noticed, not this time. ""You believe she's been trying to come between us since before the wedding."" ""I believe she thought there was still time to remind you who came first."" He lowered his eyes. When he looked back, something quiet and dangerous had settled behind them. ""And what do you believe I should do?"" Valentina almost answered too fast. Cut her out. Send her away. Humiliate her the way she humiliated me. Make everyone understand. The hurt inside her wanted that. It wanted proof, public and beautiful, that she had won. But she knew better than to ask a powerful man for revenge when what she needed was respect. Revenge could be given and taken back. Respect had to be understood. ""I think you should learn to see her clearly,"" she said, ""before I have to bleed to prove what she is."" Declan went very still. Outside, the last car rolled over the gravel. The estate settled. Somewhere a door closed. Somewhere else, a woman who had lost a dance but not yet her place was probably sitting in front of a mirror, deciding what kind of grief would work best next. ""Valentina,"" Declan said, and it was the first time all night her name had sounded less like an address and more like a confession. She turned away before it could weaken her. ""I'm tired, Declan."" He understood. She saw that he did. He looked at the bed, and then at the sofa by the fireplace, and then back at her. This was their wedding night. In another life it might have meant softness, laughter, nervous hands, the sweet awkwardness of two people choosing each other in the dark. In this life it meant a bride standing in a robe, holding herself upright with pride, and a groom learning that a ring can be put on in a second and still leave a woman feeling unsafe. ""I'll sleep in the adjoining room,"" he said. Valentina did not thank him. Gratitude for basic decency was a habit women were taught too young. He walked to the door. Then he stopped, his hand near the handle, and did not turn around. ""For what it's worth,"" he said. ""When I saw you at the altar, I forgot she was in the church."" Valentina's breath caught before she could stop it. He opened the door. ""But I understand now that forgetting another woman exists is not the same as making sure she knows where she belongs."" Then he was gone. She stood alone in the quiet suite until the candles near the mirror burned low, and she wanted to feel victorious, and she did not, and she wanted to feel chosen, and she almost did, and almost was a dangerous place to live. "Richard! Did you see the news?!" Olivia gasped, waving her iPad. "Sterling Global just announced an emergency extraordinary shareholder summit for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM in Midtown! They’re inviting all prime commercial borrowers for immediate contract execution!"

Richard leaped to his feet, adjusting his silk tie with an arrogant smirk. "You see that, Mother? That’s for my loan! Julian Sterling himself is going to hand me the check! Tell Vanessa to buy the most expensive dress on 5th Avenue. Tomorrow, the Vance family enters high society!"
