Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE EVIDENCE DISAPPEARED

The first serious threat came on a Thursday.
An investigator called Dominic.
A secure storage facility had been broken into.
Several archived records were missing.
Among them were documents related to the Saint Agnes.
Dominic's expression darkened.
He ended the call.
Then looked at me.
“Mallory.”
I stood.
“What happened?”
“Someone stole part of the evidence.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
“We don't know.”
I stared.
Then remembered something.
An old notebook.
One I'd kept from my time helping Derek.
It contained handwritten calculations.
Dates.
Names.
A reference to a vessel identifier.
I ran upstairs.
Opened a storage box.
And found it.
The notebook was still there.
I flipped through the pages.
Then stopped.
A line written in my own handwriting.
NBR-4419-C — duplicate collateral reference?
I stared.
I'd noticed it years earlier.
Before Derek left me.
Before Kendra moved into our condo.
May you like
Before I understood what it meant.
And now I had evidence that the irregularity existed long before the proposed Black Harbor deal.
