Chapter 14 - THE LIFE MALLORY BUILT HERSELF

A year after the gala, I opened my own maritime forensic consulting firm.
Not under Dominic's name.
Not under Black Harbor.
Under mine.
Keene Maritime Forensics.
I hired two analysts.
Then four.
Then six.
Our first major contract involved investigating cargo-loss discrepancies for a regional insurer.
I worked long hours.
Made mistakes.
Learned.
Grew.
And loved every minute.
Dominic supported me.
But he didn't interfere.
When I won a major contract, he brought champagne.
When I lost one, he brought takeout.
When I complained about clients, he listened.
One evening, I found him in the kitchen trying to make pasta.
The sauce had burned.
I stared.
“Dominic.”
He turned.
“Yes?”
“Are you trying to poison me?”
He looked offended.
“I'm trying to cook.”
I laughed.
He smiled.

Then pulled me close.
And for the first time in years, success felt like something I didn't have to apologize for.
