Chapter 7 - THE HUSBAND WHO REFUSED TO OWN HER

Dominic found me in the library that evening.
I was sitting on the floor.
Surrounded by old notebooks.
My notes from the years I'd spent helping Derek.
Fuel projections.
Maintenance schedules.
Freight-cost estimates.
Everything I'd once believed was building our future.
Dominic sat beside me.
He didn't speak.
After a while, I said:
“Do you ever regret marrying me?”
He turned.
“What?”
I laughed bitterly.
“I'm complicated.”
He smiled faintly.
“I noticed.”
I looked at him.
“I have an ex-fiancé who just embarrassed himself in front of half the maritime industry.”
Dominic nodded.
“True.”
“And now his company may be involved in fraud.”
“Also true.”
I swallowed.
“Doesn't that make your life difficult?”
Dominic looked at me.
“Mallory.”
I met his eyes.
“I didn't marry you because you made my life easy.”
My throat tightened.
He continued:
“I married you because I wanted to share it with you.”
I began crying.
He held out his hand.
May you like
I took it.
And for a long time, we sat together on the library floor.
