Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO FOUND THE MISSING SHIP

The investigation began the following morning.

Derek's agreement remained suspended.

His attorneys protested.

His investors demanded answers.

And Dominic's compliance team requested independent verification of every insurance document attached to the proposed deal.

I refused to lead the review.

Not because I couldn't.

Because my personal history with Derek created a conflict.

Instead, I provided the registration discrepancy to an outside forensic firm.

They confirmed it within forty-eight hours.

The certificate was invalid.

But that wasn't the worst part.

The Saint Agnes had been listed as destroyed.

Yet records suggested its identification number had appeared in several later transactions.

Not as an active vessel.

As collateral.

The same nonexistent ship had apparently been used to support multiple financial arrangements.

I stared at the findings.

Then looked at Dominic.

“Someone's using a dead ship to secure real money.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

I swallowed.

“And Derek's company is involved.”

Dominic looked at me.

“Possibly.”

I closed my eyes.

I'd spent six years helping Derek build his business.

I'd believed in him.

Defended him.

May you like

Stayed up nights correcting his projections.

Now I wondered how much of that business had ever been real.
