Chapter 12 - THE NIGHT DOMINIC CHOSE THE TRUTH

The investigation eventually reached Black Harbor's own operations.

Victor Sloane had maintained relationships with companies linked to the suspicious transactions.

Several internal controls had failed.

Dominic faced a choice.

Protect the consortium's reputation.

Or disclose the full extent of the problems.

He chose disclosure.

The decision cost millions.

Several contracts were suspended.

Regulators expanded their review.

Some investors withdrew.

Dominic accepted the consequences.

One evening, he stood beside me overlooking Boston Harbor.

“I may lose the company.”

I looked at him.

“Do you want to keep it if it means hiding the truth?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

I took his hand.

“Then you already know what to do.”

Dominic smiled sadly.

“You make difficult things sound simple.”

I laughed softly.

“I'm an underwriter.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“And?”

“I spend my life explaining why pretending a risk doesn't exist won't make it disappear.”

Dominic laughed.

May you like

Then kissed my forehead.

And together, we watched the harbor lights flicker across the water.
