Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO WALKED THROUGH THE OAK DOORS

Dominic Rourke entered the ballroom without an announcement.

He didn't need one.

Conversations stopped.

Waiters stepped aside.

Men who controlled shipping terminals and insurance syndicates straightened their jackets.

Dominic was forty-one.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dark-haired, with silver beginning at his temples.

He wore a black suit without a tie.

Four men followed him at a respectful distance.

But Dominic wasn't looking at them.

He was looking at me.

His expression changed when he saw Derek standing too close.

Then he noticed my face.

“Mallory.”

One word.

Quiet.

Concerned.

Derek turned.

His entire expression transformed.

“Mr. Rourke!”

He stepped forward, extending his hand.

“Derek Langford. We've been corresponding about the Atlantic Feeder agreement.”

Dominic glanced at the offered hand.

Then at me.

“Are you all right?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

He studied me.

“Are you sure?”

I smiled faintly.

“I'm fine.”

Derek laughed nervously.

“Mr. Rourke, I didn't realize you knew Mallory.”

Dominic turned toward him.

“I know her very well.”

Kendra smiled.

“Oh, how lovely. Are you old friends?”

Dominic looked at her.

Then back at Derek.

“No.”

He stepped beside me.

And gently took my hand.

“She's my wife.”

Silence.

Three hundred guests.

One enormous ballroom.

And not a single voice.

Derek stared.

Then laughed.

A short, disbelieving sound.

“Your what?”

Dominic's expression remained calm.

“My wife.”

Kendra's champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

It shattered against the marble.

I looked at Dominic.

He squeezed my hand once.

A question.

Not a claim.

May you like

I squeezed back.

And for the first time that evening, I smiled.
