Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT DAMIEN TOLD ME HIS SECRET

The diary contained entries from my childhood.

My grandmother had documented my medical appointments.

My parents' arguments.

The financial records she'd discovered.

One entry stopped me.

Arthur has been using Nadia's name to move money through the foundation. Margaret knows. I confronted them. They threatened to prevent me from seeing her again.

I stared.

Another entry.

Nadia is not as helpless as they claim. The doctors disagree. But Arthur keeps changing physicians.

My eyes filled.

I looked at Damien.

“Why did you marry me?”

He sat opposite me.

“Because I needed access to the Whitmore family's financial records.”

The honesty hurt.

“So I was useful.”

He swallowed.

“At first.”

I looked away.

Damien continued.

“But when I met you, I realized something.”

I stared.

“You had no idea what they were doing.”

His voice softened.

“And I couldn't leave you there.”

I swallowed.

“Was I part of your plan?”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Tears filled my eyes.

Damien continued.

“And that was wrong.”

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then he whispered:

“I should have told you everything before the wedding.”

I looked down.

Because the man who had helped me escape was also the man who had used me.

And I didn't know how to forgive that.
