Chapter 4 - THE FIRST NIGHT AS MRS. BLACKWELL

That evening, Damien found me sitting on the bedroom floor.

My belongings were scattered around me.

Books.

Clothes.

Photographs.

Everything I'd been allowed to take from Whitmore House.

He stopped in the doorway.

“Are you okay?”

I laughed bitterly.

“Does anyone ever answer that honestly?”

He considered the question.

“Sometimes.”

I looked down.

“Then no.”

Damien entered.

But he didn't touch me.

He sat on the floor a few feet away.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Then I whispered:

“I don't know who I am.”

He looked at me.

I continued.

“My entire life, I was the sick daughter.”

My voice broke.

“The difficult one.”

“The expensive one.”

Tears filled my eyes.

“What if none of that was true?”

Damien looked down.

Then said quietly:

“Then you get to find out who you are without them.”

I stared.

He continued.

“And you don't have to do it all at once.”

For a moment, I wanted to lean against him.

To let someone hold me.

But I didn't know whether I could trust him.

Damien seemed to understand.

He stood.

“Your room is yours.”

I blinked.

“What?”

He gestured around us.

“Your space. Your decisions.”

I swallowed.

“And our marriage?”

He hesitated.

Then answered:

“Whatever you want it to become.”

May you like

That night, I slept with the door unlocked.

For the first time in years.
