Chapter 10 - THE MAFIA BOSS WHO LET ME WALK AWAY

I left Damien's house.
Not because I hated him.
Because I needed to know who I was without anyone making decisions for me.
I rented a small apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.
It had two bedrooms.
A tiny kitchen.
And windows that opened.
I bought my own groceries.
Chose my own clothes.
Made my own appointments.
For the first time, my life belonged to me.
Damien didn't stop me.
He helped arrange safe transportation.
Then stepped back.
One evening, he called.
“Nadia.”
I smiled faintly.
“Damien.”
He hesitated.
“Are you okay?”
I looked around my apartment.
The books.
The plants.
The half-finished painting on the table.
“Yes.”
For the first time, the answer was true.
Damien was silent.
Then said:
“I'm glad.”
I swallowed.
“Thank you.”
May you like
He didn't ask when I was coming back.
And somehow, that made me miss him more.
