Chapter 5 - THE SISTER WHO CAME BACK FOR EVERYTHING

Savannah arrived at the Blackwell residence on Friday afternoon.
She wore a cream suit and an expression of carefully arranged concern.
“Nadia.”
I stood.
“Savannah.”
She looked around the living room.
Then smiled.
“Well.”
I waited.
She continued.
“You've certainly landed on your feet.”
I crossed my arms.
“What do you want?”
Her smile faded.
“I came to see my sister.”
I laughed.
“That's new.”
Savannah looked toward the hallway.
“Where's Damien?”
“At work.”
She frowned.
“Really?”
I stared.
“Why?”
She shrugged.
“I thought he wasn't capable of running things anymore.”
I smiled faintly.
“People say a lot of things.”
She sat.
Then leaned forward.
“Nadia, Mother is worried.”
I stared.
“About me?”
Savannah nodded.
“She thinks Damien is manipulating you.”
I almost laughed.
“And what do you think?”
Savannah hesitated.
Then said:
“I think you should come home.”
My stomach tightened.
“No.”
Her expression changed.
“Nadia.”
“No.”
I stepped closer.
“I'm not going back to the east wing.”
Savannah looked away.
Then whispered:
“You don't understand.”
I frowned.
“What?”
Her eyes filled.
“If you stay here, Father will lose everything.”
I stared.

For the first time, I realized Savannah hadn't come because she missed me.
She'd come because the family's secrets were beginning to collapse.
