Chapter 15 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER BROKEN

Three years later, I stood in the garden of our home.

The sun warmed my face.

A little girl laughed nearby.

“Mommy!”

I turned.

Our daughter, Lily Blackwell, ran toward me.

Dark curls.

Bright eyes.

A smile that looked exactly like Damien's.

I laughed.

“Careful, sweetheart.”

Damien appeared behind her.

He lifted Lily into his arms.

“Trouble?”

She giggled.

“Daddy!”

I watched them.

For a moment, I remembered the east wing.

The locked doors.

The silence.

Then I looked at the life we'd built.

I had completed my education.

Started a foundation supporting people recovering from medical exploitation and family abuse.

Damien had stepped away from much of the violent world he'd inherited.

He focused on legitimate businesses.

And spent more time at home.

That evening, after Lily fell asleep, Damien found me in the library.

I was holding my grandmother's blue diary.

He sat beside me.

“Thinking about the past?”

I smiled faintly.

“A little.”

He took my hand.

“Regrets?”

I thought about it.

Then shook my head.

“Not about choosing my own life.”

Damien smiled.

I looked at him.

“Do you remember what you said at our first wedding?”

He nodded.

“They really thought I was blind.”

I laughed.

He continued.

“I remember something else.”

I looked up.

“What?”

He smiled.

“You looked at me like I was the first person who had ever really seen you.”

My eyes filled.

Damien kissed my forehead.

“And I knew I never wanted you to feel invisible again.”

I leaned against him.

Outside, Chicago glittered beneath the night sky.

Inside, our daughter slept peacefully.

And the woman who had once been treated like a burden finally understood something.

I had never been broken.

I had only been surrounded by people who wanted me to believe I was.

But now I was free.

May you like

Loved.

And finally living a life that belonged to me.
