Chapter 6 - THE DOCTOR WHO NEVER EXAMINED ME

The independent medical evaluation took place at a private hospital.

A physician named Dr. Elena Brooks reviewed my records.

She asked questions nobody had ever asked.

When had my symptoms begun?

What happened before each episode?

Had I ever been allowed to manage my own medication?

I answered as honestly as I could.

The tests took several days.

Bloodwork.

Imaging.

Specialist consultations.

When Dr. Brooks finally called us into her office, I was shaking.

Damien sat beside me.

He didn't hold my hand until I reached for his.

Dr. Brooks looked at me.

“Nadia, some of your symptoms are real.”

My chest tightened.

She continued.

“But the records you've brought contain inconsistencies.”

I swallowed.

“What kind?”

She explained that several diagnoses lacked supporting test results.

Some medications could have contributed to symptoms I'd been experiencing.

And certain reports appeared to have been altered.

I stared.

“So I'm not sick?”

Dr. Brooks shook her head.

“It's not that simple. We need to evaluate each condition carefully and make any medication changes safely.”

Tears filled my eyes.

She continued.

“But I can tell you this: you deserve a clear explanation of your health, and you deserve to participate in decisions about your treatment.”

I began crying.

Damien squeezed my hand.

May you like

For the first time, someone was treating me like a person.

Not a diagnosis.
