Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT EVELYN DISAPPEARED

The threat arrived four days later.

A white envelope appeared beneath Evelyn's bedroom door.

Inside was a photograph.

Adrian leaving a restaurant.

A red circle drawn around his head.

On the back were six words.

STOP ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT RED HARBOR.

Evelyn's hands began shaking.

She called Adrian.

He answered immediately.

“Evelyn?”

She couldn't speak.

“What's wrong?”

She stared at the photograph.

Then whispered, “They know.”

Adrian's voice changed.

“Where are you?”

“At home.”

“Stay with security. I'm coming.”

But Evelyn was terrified.

Not only for herself.

For Adrian.

For their daughter.

She remembered Malcolm's warning.

She remembered Helena's fear.

And she began to believe that staying near Adrian might put him in greater danger.

That evening, with help from her attorney, Evelyn moved to a confidential location.

She left Adrian a letter.

I love you.

But I need to know our daughter will be safe.

Please don't come looking for me until we understand who is behind this.

Adrian found the letter after midnight.

He read it twice.

Then sat down.

For the first time in years, the most feared man in New York felt completely powerless.
