Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT ADRIAN ALMOST LOST THEM

Evelyn went into premature labor at thirty-four weeks.

She was staying in a protected apartment outside the city.

Her attorney called emergency services.

At the hospital, doctors monitored her carefully.

Evelyn was frightened.

Her contractions were strong.

And Grace was arriving too early.

She asked for Adrian.

Her attorney contacted him.

He arrived at the hospital as quickly as possible.

When he entered the room, Evelyn began crying.

“Adrian.”

He approached.

“I'm here.”

She reached for his hand.

He held it.

“I'm scared.”

His eyes filled.

“I know.”

She swallowed.

“What if something happens to her?”

He kissed her forehead.

“We have a medical team taking care of you both.”

Evelyn began crying.

Adrian stayed beside her.

Hours later, their daughter was born.

Small.

Fragile.

Beautiful.

The medical team assessed Grace and arranged neonatal care because she had arrived early.

Evelyn watched as the nurses cared for her.

Then looked at Adrian.

“Is she okay?”

He held her hand.

“She has people helping her.”

His voice broke.

“And we're right here.”
