Chapter 6 - THE MAN ADRIAN CALLED UNCLE

Malcolm Creed arrived at Vale headquarters the following morning.

He was sixty-one.

Silver-haired.

Impeccably dressed.

And smiling.

“Adrian.”

He extended his hand.

Adrian didn't take it.

Malcolm's smile faded.

“Something wrong?”

Adrian looked at him.

“Tell me about Red Harbor.”

Silence.

Then Malcolm laughed softly.

“That was a long time ago.”

Adrian stared.

“My father died twelve years ago.”

Malcolm nodded.

“A terrible tragedy.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“Was it?”

Malcolm's expression changed.

“Careful.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

There it was.

The warning.

The same tone Malcolm had used when Adrian was twenty-four.

When he was grieving.

When he was frightened.

When he needed someone to tell him what to do.

But Adrian was no longer twenty-four.

He looked at Malcolm.

“I've retained independent counsel and ordered an external audit.”

Malcolm went still.

“Why?”

May you like

“Because I want to know what happened to my father.”

For the first time, Malcolm looked afraid.
