Chapter 5 - THE MOTHER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Helena finally told the truth.

Not all at once.

Not easily.

But enough.

Twelve years earlier, Malcolm had threatened her after Vincent began investigating the missing money.

He told her that if she warned her husband, Adrian would be killed.

Helena had been terrified.

She agreed to meet Malcolm at Red Harbor.

She believed she could persuade him to stop.

Instead, Malcolm demanded access to Vincent's private records.

Helena refused.

The following night, Vincent died.

Adrian listened without interrupting.

When Helena finished, he asked one question.

“Did you help him?”

Helena looked up.

“No.”

Adrian stared.

“Did you know he intended to kill my father?”

Her eyes filled.

“I suspected something terrible might happen.”

Adrian turned away.

The answer hurt more than he expected.

Helena stepped toward him.

“Adrian.”

He raised a hand.

“Don't.”

She stopped.

He looked toward Evelyn.

His wife sat quietly, one hand resting over their unborn daughter.

For eight months, Helena had treated her as an outsider.

A liability.

Someone unworthy of the Vale name.

Yet Evelyn had been the only person brave enough to uncover the truth.

Adrian looked back at his mother.

“You will never threaten my wife again.”

Helena began crying.

“Adrian—”

“No.”

May you like

His voice was steady.

“You don't get to decide who belongs in my family.”
