Chapter 3 - THE PHOTOGRAPH FROM RED HARBOR

Adrian had spent twelve years believing his father died because of rain.

A slippery road.

A broken guardrail.

An overturned sedan.

Now he stood in his childhood library listening to his wife explain why none of those details told the whole story.

Evelyn sat on the sofa.

Adrian had insisted she stop standing.

Helena remained beside the fireplace.

Nobody touched the separation agreement.

Evelyn opened her handbag.

Her fingers trembled as she removed a small photograph.

She handed it to Adrian.

He stared.

The image showed his mother standing beside Malcolm Creed outside a warehouse at Red Harbor.

The timestamp was dated one night before Vincent Vale's death.

Adrian frowned.

“Why would this matter?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Because your father was supposed to meet Malcolm there.”

Adrian looked up.

“How do you know?”

“I found a letter.”

Helena's expression changed.

“What letter?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“The one Vincent wrote before he died.”

Adrian went still.

“My father wrote a letter?”

Evelyn nodded.

“He hid it inside an old accounting book.”

Adrian stared.

“Where?”

“In your study.”

He closed his eyes.

For years, he'd worked in that room.

Signed contracts.

Held meetings.

Planned business deals.

All while a secret about his father's death sat hidden nearby.

Evelyn continued.

“Your father believed someone was stealing money from the shipping companies.”

Adrian's jaw tightened.

“Malcolm?”

She nodded.

“He suspected Malcolm.”

Helena looked toward the window.

Adrian turned to her.

“Mother.”

She didn't answer.

“Did you know?”

May you like

Helena swallowed.

Then whispered, “Yes.”
