Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE MADE IN THE HOSPITAL

Grace was discharged from the hospital after several weeks.
Evelyn held her daughter close as they prepared to leave.
Adrian carried the diaper bag.
The car seat.
And approximately six unnecessary blankets.
Evelyn laughed.
“Adrian.”
He looked up.
“What?”
“We're going home, not crossing Antarctica.”
He smiled.
“I like being prepared.”
She laughed again.
For the first time in months, the sound filled him with something close to peace.
Before leaving, Adrian stopped beside the hospital window.
“Evelyn.”
She looked at him.
“Yes?”
“I owe you an apology.”
Her smile faded.
He continued.
“I should have noticed what my mother was doing.”
Evelyn looked down.
“I tried to hide it.”
He nodded.
“But I should have made sure you never felt alone in our home.”
Her eyes filled.
Adrian took a breath.
“I can't promise our lives will always be easy.”
She smiled faintly.
“I know.”
“But I can promise you'll never have to beg anyone for a place in our family again.”
Tears streamed down her cheeks.
May you like
He kissed her forehead.
“And neither will Grace.”
