Chapter 1 - The Teasing in the ShadowsWren waited until they were inside the apartment before she started crying.

“They said I don’t have a dad.”

Maren dropped to her knees on the faded living room rug and pulled her seven-year-old daughter into her arms. Wren had tried so hard to act like the teasing at school didn’t matter, but that afternoon the dam finally broke. Her small shoulders shook with heavy, ragged sobs that tore straight through Maren’s heart.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” Maren whispered, smoothing down Wren’s soft brown curls.

Wren wiped her wet face with the sleeve of her oversized sweater. “But I do have one… don’t I?”

Maren’s chest tightened as if bound by iron wire. “Yes, baby. You have a father. A very real one.”

“Then why doesn’t he ever come? Why doesn’t he pick me up after school like the other dads?”

That question stayed with Maren long after Wren cried herself to sleep, clutching the small plush rabbit that sat on her pillow.

For three months, Luca DeLuca had been calling, texting, and sending handwritten letters to Maren’s modest floral design studio in Lincoln Park. Luca—the brilliant, fiercely guarded Chief Executive Officer of DeLuca Global Enterprises—had spent eight years believing that Maren had taken a payoff and vanished from his life forever. When a chance encounter at a charity foundation revealed the existence of a seven-year-old girl with his piercing slate-grey eyes and stubborn chin, Luca had moved heaven and earth to reach them.

Maren had kept him at a distance. She was terrified of the DeLuca family dynasty. She was terrified that Luca would enter Wren’s fragile world, make the little girl love him, and then disappear when his demanding empire called.

But Wren was bleeding from an absence she couldn't understand.

So Maren finally dialed the private number she had memorized eight years ago.

Three weeks later, the double doors of the Grand Palmer Ballroom in downtown Chicago opened into an ocean of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and five hundred of the city’s most influential elite. It was the annual DeLuca Children’s Hospital Foundation Gala.

Wren stood beside her mother in a modest, knee-length navy velvet dress that Maren had spent two weeks altering by hand. In her small palm, Wren clutched a heavy silver track-and-field medal—an engraved collegiate heirloom Luca had secretly given Maren eight years ago on the night they said goodbye.

Luca had planned to step onto the grand stage at 8:30 PM to introduce Wren to the world.

Wren looked up at the towering marble columns, her small fingers trembling. She still wasn't sure she was ready for this glittering world.

Then, two boys from her second-grade class at St. Jude’s Academy spotted her across the velvet ropes.

Julian Sterling and Carter Hayes—the pampered sons of prominent venture capitalists—nudged each other and marched over with mocking grins.

“Why are you here, Wren?” Julian laughed loudly. “This is a party for important families.”

Carter looked around at the tuxedos, diamond necklaces, and security guards. “Did your mom come here looking for somebody to buy your lunch and be your dad?”

Wren lowered her eyes, clutching the silver medal tight against her chest, and tried to back away toward the garden terrace.

The boys stepped directly into her path.

“You’re running away because it’s true,” Carter sneered. “You still don’t have a dad.”

Across the crowded ballroom, Maren caught sight of her daughter trapped against the stone balustrade and began pushing frantically through the sea of silk gowns.

What those boys did next would humiliate Wren in front of the entire Chicago elite. But what happened after that would force Luca DeLuca to shatter an eight-year-old lie his powerful family had spent millions trying to bury.
