Chapter 4 - The Eight-Year LieThe silence in the Grand Palmer Ballroom was so absolute that the gentle splashing of the fountain sounded deafening.

Carmela DeLuca pushed through the front row of onlookers, her face pale beneath her makeup, her manicured fingers clutching her pearl necklace.
“Luca!” Carmela commanded in a sharp, frantic whisper. “Stand up this instant! You are making a grotesque spectacle of yourself in front of our board of directors and the Vance family!”
Luca rose slowly to his full height. He took off his soaked tuxedo jacket, gently draped it around Wren’s small, shivering shoulders, and scooped his daughter into his arms. Wren clung to his neck, burying her face into his shoulder as if she had finally found the anchor she had searched for her whole life.
With his free hand, Luca reached out and pulled Maren firmly to his side, his fingers interlacing with hers in full view of every high-society camera in Chicago.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Luca announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the vaulted hall. “Eight years ago, the woman beside me, Maren Vance-Cole, was forced out of my life through a coordinated web of forged letters, financial intimidation, and deceit engineered by people standing in this room.”
Victoria Vance gasped, stepping forward. “Luca, this is insane! We are announcing our merger and engagement tonight!”
“There is no engagement, Victoria. And there never was,” Luca replied with icy finality.
He turned his gaze toward Penelope Sterling and her terrified son Julian, who was cowering behind his father’s tuxedo.
“Mrs. Sterling,” Luca continued, his eyes turning to cold steel. “Your son just asked my daughter where her father was. Allow me to answer that for the entire city of Chicago.”
Luca lifted Wren higher so that every lens, reporter, and guest could see her face.
“This is Wren DeLuca. She is my daughter, my sole heir, and the future majority shareholder of DeLuca Global Enterprises. This foundation, this building, and this very gala were organized and funded in her name.”
A massive wave of whispers, camera flashes, and breathless murmurs erupted across the room.
Penelope Sterling turned a sickly shade of grey, grabbing her husband’s arm to keep from fainting. Her husband, Arthur Sterling, whose venture capital firm relied on a $200 million liquidity line from DeLuca Global, looked at his son Julian with pure terror.
“Mr. DeLuca... please,” Arthur Sterling begged, stepping forward with his hands raised. “It was a children’s misunderstanding! Julian didn't know!”
“Your son learned his cruelty at your dinner table, Arthur,” Luca stated coldly. “Effective at eight o'clock tomorrow morning, DeLuca Global terminates all venture funding agreements with Sterling Capital. Furthermore, the board of St. Jude’s Academy will receive my formal demand for an immediate disciplinary expulsion hearing for both your son and Carter Hayes.”

Julian began to wail loudly, clinging to his mother’s emerald dress. Penelope dragged her crying son toward the side exit as security guards escorted them out of the hall under the merciless glare of dozens of smartphone cameras.
Luca turned toward his mother Carmela, his expression hardening into an unyielding wall of justice. “And now, Mother... let us discuss what happened eight years ago in your private study.”
