Chapter 7 - The Bullies’ ExpulsionAt 1:30 PM that afternoon, the private administrative board of St. Jude’s Academy convened an emergency disciplinary hearing in the headmaster’s oak-paneled library.

Penelope Sterling and her husband Arthur sat on one side of the table, clutching their crying son Julian. Beside them sat Carter Hayes and his parents, looking anxious and defeated.
On the other side of the table sat Headmaster Dr. Harrison, flanked by the school’s legal counsel and Luca DeLuca’s personal representatives.
“Dr. Harrison, please be reasonable,” Arthur Sterling pleaded, sweating through his shirt collar. “Julian is only seven! It was rough play between classmates! We are willing to make a substantial $500,000 endowment donation to the school’s new science wing!”
Dr. Harrison pulled up the crystal-clear 4K security footage from the Grand Palmer Ballroom on his laptop and turned the screen toward the parents.
The video captured everything: Julian ripping the medal from Wren’s neck, Carter taunting her about having no father, and the deliberate throwing of the heirloom into the fountain while Wren sobbed.
“This is not rough play, Mr. Sterling,” Dr. Harrison stated with cold finality. “This is predatory, premeditated harassment that violates the fundamental code of conduct of St. Jude’s Academy. Furthermore, our school’s largest benefactor—the DeLuca Family Foundation—has officially withdrawn its multi-million-dollar tuition subsidy program for families found guilty of behavioral misconduct.”
Dr. Harrison signed two expulsion orders and slid them across the table.
“Julian Sterling and Carter Hayes are expelled from St. Jude’s Academy effective immediately. You have until four o'clock to clear their lockers.”
Penelope gasped in horror. “You can't do this! No other elite private academy in Chicago will accept them with an expulsion on their permanent record!”
“Then I suggest you look into online homeschooling, Mrs. Sterling,” the school attorney replied smoothly.
As the disgraced families were escorted off the campus, Wren stood in the courtyard holding her mother’s hand, watching the autumn leaves dance across the stone path.
A shiny black SUV pulled up to the curb. Luca stepped out, wearing a warm wool coat, carrying a bouquet of pink daisies and a fresh box of artisan strawberry macarons—Wren’s favorite.
“Daddy!” Wren cheered, letting go of Maren’s hand and running across the lawn.
Luca dropped to one knee, caught his daughter in his arms, and spun her around in the crisp autumn air as her joyful laughter echoed across the school grounds.

“Are you ready to go home, little sparrow?” Luca asked, kissing her forehead.
Wren wrapped her arms tightly around his neck. “Yes, Daddy. With you and Mommy.”
