Chapter 9 - The Custody Decree of Steel

Three months later, Courtroom 6B of the Nassau County Family Courthouse convened for the final custody determination of Lily Vance.

Judge Evelyn Wright presided over the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

Sitting at the defense table was Richard Vance, dressed in a cheap, ill-fitting suit provided by legal aid, with dark circles under his hollow eyes. He was penniless, living in a basement studio in Newark, working twelve-hour shifts at a distribution center to pay off court-ordered restitution.

Sitting at the petitioner’s table was Maya, accompanied by Julian Sterling and family attorney Samuel Price.

Judge Wright adjusted her spectacles and reviewed the evidence: the viral cake video, the financial embezzlement filings, and the sworn statements of domestic cruelty.

She brought her heavy wooden gavel down with a thunderous crack.

"The court finds overwhelming, incontrovertible evidence of gross moral depravity, domestic abuse, and financial exploitation," Judge Wright declared. "The parental rights of Richard Vance are hereby permanently restricted. Maya Sterling is awarded sole, exclusive legal and physical custody of Lily Vance, with zero visitation rights granted until the child reaches legal age of majority."

Richard buried his face in his hands, sobbing in broken, irreversible despair as the gavel echoed through the chamber.

Maya stood tall, took Julian’s outstretched hand, and walked out through the courthouse double doors into the brilliant Manhattan afternoon, free and victorious.
