Chapter 3 - The Man at the Iron Gate

"Get the car," Julian ordered, rising to his full height of six-foot-two. "Now."

"Sir? It's 1:30 in the morning," Thomas stammered, scrambling for his phone.

"My uncle Harold has spent twenty-four years searching every corner of this country for his daughter's child," Julian said, his eyes blazing with fierce urgency. "The woman Richard Vance shoved into a cake is the sole legal heiress to Sterling Global Enterprises."

Thirty minutes later, three black armored Maybachs pulled silently up to the curb outside the Queens diner.

The glass door chimed as Julian stepped inside. He had removed his overcoat, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with sleeves rolled up, radiating an aura of commanding authority that made the night waitress immediately freeze.

Maya looked up from her booth, her instincts immediately flaring into defensive alert. She shifted her body to shield the sleeping Lily.

"Can I help you?" Maya asked, keeping her chin up and her voice steady.

Julian stopped two paces from the booth, stepping back with deep, respectful deference. He slowly reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a heavy gold signet ring.

He set it gently onto the formica table.

It was an exact, identical twin to Maya's silver ring—except carved in twenty-four-karat gold with a sapphire center.

Maya's breath hitched. Her hand flew to the chain beneath her shirt.

"My name is Julian Sterling," he said softly, his deep gray eyes filled with profound reverence. "Twenty-four years ago, your mother, Victoria Sterling, disappeared during a family crisis. My family has never stopped looking for her child."

Julian knelt beside the table so his eyes were level with hers.

"You and your daughter will never have to spend another night in the cold, Maya. You are going home."
