Evan called the next morning.
I hadn't heard his voice in months.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
My stomach tightened.
“Don't call me that.”
He laughed.
“Still angry?”
I closed my eyes.
“What do you want?”
“Ava.”
My blood ran cold.
“Why?”
Silence.
Then he said, “I have rights.”
I swallowed.
“You haven't seen her since she was born.”
He laughed.
“Doesn't mean I can't.”
I looked toward Ava.
She was playing on the rug.
Evan continued.
“I hear you're working for Reed Callaway.”
My stomach tightened.
“Leave him out of this.”
He laughed softly.
“Oh, honey.”
Then he said, “You have no idea what kind of man you're working for.”
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
