Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS MONEY

Reed offered me a raise.
I refused.
He stared.
“Why?”
I swallowed.
“Because I don't want special treatment.”
He leaned back.
“It's not special treatment.”
I looked at him.
“Then why now?”
He was silent.
I continued.
“Because you saw my daughter?”
Reed studied me.
Then nodded.
“Partly.”
I swallowed.
He continued.
“And because I reviewed the payroll.”
My heart skipped.
“What?”
He leaned forward.
“You've been working closing shifts without the proper overtime adjustment.”
I stared.
He continued.
“That should have been corrected months ago.”
My eyes filled.
“So the raise—”
“Isn't charity.”
He paused.
“It's money you've earned.”
I looked down.
Then whispered, “Thank you.”

Reed shook his head.
“Don't thank me for paying you correctly.”
