Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT AVA DISAPPEARED

The nightmare began on a Friday afternoon.
Ava was at a licensed daycare near my apartment.
I arrived at five.
The receptionist looked confused.
“Ms. Bennett?”
My stomach tightened.
“Yes?”
She frowned.
“Ava was picked up.”
I stopped breathing.
“What?”
The receptionist looked at the computer.
“Her father signed her out.”
My knees weakened.
“He isn't authorized.”
Silence.
The receptionist's face went pale.
I called the police immediately.
Then my phone rang.
Evan.
I answered with shaking hands.
“Where is she?”
He laughed.
“Hello, sweetheart.”
My voice broke.
“Evan, please.”
“You want her back?”
I closed my eyes.
“Yes.”
“Then tell Callaway to give me what Vincent promised.”
My blood ran cold.
“What?”
Evan laughed.
“Ask your boss.”
The call ended.
I collapsed against the wall.
Then I called Reed.
He answered immediately.
“What's wrong?”
My voice broke.
“He took Ava.”
May you like
Silence.
Then Reed said, “Tell me where you are.”
