Chapter 14 - THE PROMISE HE MADE TO BOTH OF THEM

Two years later, Reed proposed.
Not in a ballroom.
Not at a gala.
Not in front of wealthy guests.
He proposed in the small garden behind our home.
Ava was almost three.
She adored Reed.
Called him “Ree.”
And insisted he read the same bedtime story every night.
That afternoon, Reed asked me to walk with him.
The garden was filled with white flowers.
I smiled.
“What's going on?”
He laughed nervously.
“Something important.”
Then he lowered himself onto one knee.
My breath caught.
“Reed.”
He opened a small velvet box.
Inside was a simple diamond ring.
“Ms. Bennett.”
My eyes filled.
“The first time I met you, you were hiding your baby in a supply closet.”
He swallowed.
“You were terrified.”
“But you were still trying to protect her.”
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
Reed continued.
“You taught me that love isn't about controlling someone.”
“It's about making room for them.”
“Respecting them.”
“And choosing them every day.”
He smiled.
“Will you marry me?”
I laughed through tears.
“Yes.”
Reed's eyes widened.
“Really?”
I nodded.
“Yes, Reed.”
He stood.
I threw my arms around him.
Behind us, Ava shouted.
“DOES THIS MEAN REE IS MY DADDY FOREVER?”
We burst out laughing.
Reed looked at her.
“If that's what you want, sweetheart.”
May you like
Ava grinned.
“YES!”
