Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE WAS BETRAYED AGAIN

The first threatening message arrived at 9:14 p.m.
Your father should have kept his mouth shut.
I stared at the screen.
A second message appeared.
Don't make the same mistake.
My hands went cold.
I called my attorney, Rebecca Sloan.
She answered immediately.
“Claire?”
“I think someone knows where I am.”
Her voice sharpened.
“Are you safe?”
“I don't know.”
“Lock the doors. I'm calling the local police.”
I stood.
Then heard a car outside.
Headlights swept across the living room.
I stepped away from the window.
My phone vibrated again.
Give us the recording.
My heart pounded.
I looked toward the cassette player.
Then toward the blue front door.
A shadow moved across the porch.
Someone knocked.
Three slow knocks.
“Mrs. Moretti?”
A man's voice.
“I need to speak with you.”
I didn't answer.
He knocked again.
“Your mother-in-law sent me.”
I backed away.
May you like
Then whispered into the phone:
“Rebecca, send help.”
