Chapter 6 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE RESCUE

Eleanor Hayes had been engaged to Daniel Bennett.

They were supposed to marry in the spring.

Daniel worked with my father at Bennett Freight.

He was twenty-seven.

Funny.

Stubborn.

And determined to build something honest in a city where honesty was becoming increasingly expensive.

Then he discovered that Salvatore Moretti had been using Bennett Freight shipments to move illegal goods.

Thomas confronted Salvatore.

Salvatore promised to stop.

He didn't.

Instead, he arranged a meeting at the warehouse.

Thomas brought Daniel.

Vincent, then twenty-two, was there because his father had ordered him to supervise a delivery.

The meeting became an ambush.

Daniel was killed.

Thomas dragged Vincent to safety.

And Salvatore blamed the entire incident on a rival organization.

I sat motionless.

“Why didn't Dad tell me?”

Eleanor looked down.

“Because Salvatore threatened everyone Thomas loved.”

I swallowed.

“But Salvatore died years ago.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then why keep the secret?”

Eleanor hesitated.

“Because Salvatore left people behind who benefited from the lie.”

My heart began pounding.

“Who?”

Eleanor looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“Margaret Moretti.”
