Chapter 1 - THE LETTER BENEATH THE FERRIS WHEEL

Vincent Moretti had seen men die without blinking.

He had survived ambushes, betrayals, and wars that left entire criminal organizations in ruins.

But the letter in his hands made him forget how to breathe.

He stood beneath the Ferris wheel at Lakeshore Adventure Park, surrounded by reporters, security guards, and the woman he'd chosen over his wife's grief.

The first page contained only six sentences.

Vincent,

Fifteen years ago, I saved your life because I believed a frightened young man deserved another chance.

I have spent the years since wondering whether I saved the right man.

The night you were nearly killed, someone else died protecting you.

You were told that man's death was an accident.

It wasn't.

And the person who ordered it is someone you still allow inside your home.

Vincent stared at the words.

Then turned the page.

There was a photograph.

An old photograph, faded at the corners.

Three men stood outside a warehouse beside the Chicago River.

Vincent recognized himself at twenty-two.

He recognized Thomas Bennett, Claire's father.

And he recognized the third man.

His own father.

Salvatore Moretti.

But the photograph wasn't what made his hands shake.

It was the handwritten sentence beneath it.

Your father ordered the ambush. I was supposed to die that night. You were never the target.

Vincent felt the world shift.

Salvatore Moretti had died eight years earlier.

Vincent had spent most of his life believing his father was a ruthless but loyal man.

A man who protected family.

A man who never betrayed his own people.

Now Thomas Bennett was accusing him of arranging a murder.

Vincent turned to the final page.

If you want the truth, ask your mother what happened to Daniel Bennett.

Vincent frowned.

Daniel Bennett?

He had never heard the name.

Then he noticed the last sentence.

And Vincent, if my daughter is standing beside you when you read this, tell her I am sorry I couldn't protect her from the Moretti family.

Vincent looked up.

Claire was gone.

The amusement park lights continued flashing.

Children laughed in the distance.

Sophia touched his arm.

“Vincent?”

He barely heard her.

He turned toward his security chief.

“Find Claire.”

“Boss—”

“NOW!”

His voice echoed beneath the Ferris wheel.

“BRING MY WIFE BACK!”

But for the first time in his life, Vincent Moretti was giving an order that nobody could guarantee would be obeyed.
