Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Justice

Six months after that fateful morning at the Valdivia mansion, Courtroom 1 of the Supreme Palace of Justice convened for the formal sentencing of Doña Beatriz Valdivia and her co-conspirators.
The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, foreign diplomats, mining magnates, and hundreds of citizens who had followed the sensational trial.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery, radiant and untouchable, was Lucía Mendoza, flanked by Gabriel, Dr. Mateo Navarro, and Agent Valeria Sterling.
At the defense table sat Beatriz Valdivia, surrounded by court-appointed public defenders after her private legal funds had been completely seized under federal restitution orders. She sat motionless, her face like carved stone, refusing to meet the eyes of the public.
Chief Justice Morales adjusted his spectacles and delivered the court's judgment with thunderous moral authority.
"The defendant, Beatriz Valdivia, orchestrated a calculated, depraved, and continuous campaign of chemical assassination and financial extortion against an innocent family member who entrusted her with her life," Justice Morales declared, his voice ringing with absolute finality.
The judge brought down his heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that echoed like thunder through the vaulted hall.
"On the charges of Premeditated Attempted Homicide with Aggravating Factors of Poisoning, Fiduciary Fraud, Bribery of Public Officials, and Criminal Conspiracy: Beatriz Valdivia is hereby sentenced to Thirty-Five Years of Imprisonment at the High-Security Penitentiary of Arica, without the possibility of parole or early administrative commutation."
A collective, emotional cheer erupted from the public gallery.
"Co-conspirator Dr. Hernán Silva is stripped of his medical license in perpetuity and sentenced to eighteen years in federal prison. Sebastián Valdivia is sentenced to fifteen years in state custody."
Justice Morales struck his gavel a second time.
"Furthermore, the court orders the complete forfeiture of the Valdivia estate, including the mansion and all coastal holdings, to be liquidated and transferred directly to the Lucía Mendoza Foundation for the Protection of Domestic Crime Survivors as full civil restitution."

Beatriz collapsed forward onto the table, her spirit completely shattered as federal marshals stepped forward, secured the heavy transport chains around her waist, and escorted her away through the iron holding door forever.
Lucía took a long, deep breath. The courtroom air was no longer heavy with medicine and fear. It was clean, pure, and filled with the scent of victory.
