Chapter 3 - The Forensic Reckoning

Within thirty minutes, the grand courtyard of the Valdivia estate was illuminated by the flashing crimson and amber strobes of four forensic mobile laboratories and a medical transport helicopter.

Lucía was stabilized and airlifted directly to the intensive toxicology unit at the Naval Military Hospital in San Lorenzo, under the 24-hour guard of elite federal operatives.

Back at the mansion, the master suite and Beatriz’s private quarters were cordoned off with yellow forensic barrier tape. Technicians in sterile white hazardous-material suits dusted every surface, testing medication bottles, personal lotions, and the estate's private culinary pantry.

In the mansion’s ground-floor library, Doña Beatriz and Sebastián were seated on a leather sofa under the watchful eyes of two armed federal marshals.

Agent Valeria Sterling laid three high-resolution digital tablets on the coffee table before them.

"Let us review the paper trail of this 'delicate illness,' shall we?" Valeria began, tapping the first screen.

The display revealed banking transaction logs originating from an offshore holding company registered in the British Virgin Islands under the name Mariposa Real Holdings.

"Six months ago, precisely when Lucía’s first tremors began," Valeria stated, "Doña Beatriz executed three untraceable cryptocurrency transfers totaling $45,000 to an unlicensed chemical broker operating in the port of Valparaíso. The invoice described the shipment as 'industrial pest eradication reagents'—specifically, 500 grams of laboratory-grade thallium sulfate."

Sebastián’s jaw dropped. He snapped his head toward his mother. "Mother... you bought industrial chemicals?!"

"Be quiet, Sebastián!" Beatriz snapped, though her voice wavered with unmistakable terror. "They are manufacturing evidence to extort our family!"

"We do not need to manufacture anything, Doña Beatriz," Valeria replied smoothly. She tapped the second screen, revealing high-definition security footage taken from inside the mansion's private pantry.

The hidden camera—installed three weeks earlier by an undercover maid placed by federal intelligence—showed Beatriz wearing latex gloves, measuring a fine greyish-white powder from an antique silver snuffbox, and stirring it into Lucía’s morning ceramic teapot before handing it to the kitchen maid.

"The video includes timestamped audio," Valeria continued with lethal calm. "In which you can be heard saying: 'A few more drops every day, and by spring, the entire Mendoza mining concession belongs to the Valdivia line.'"

Sebastián buried his face in his hands, groaning in pure, unadulterated panic. "Oh God... oh God, I told you it was too dangerous! I told you Gabriel would find out!"

Doña Beatriz’s eyes flared with venomous shock. "You coward! You sniveling, ungrateful boy! Who do you think paid off your seventy-million-peso gambling debts in Viña del Mar?! I did this to save our dynasty!"

Agent Sterling smiled, a cold, pristine expression. "Thank you both for that recorded admission on our official audio logs. It saves the prosecutor’s office hours of cross-examination."
