Chapter 2 - The Poison in the Porcelain Cup

Dr. Mateo Navarro, a renowned military toxicologist, moved with clinical precision. Within seconds, his team had established an intravenous line of Prussian blue solution and sodium thiosulfate into Lucía’s arm while transferring her onto a cushioned titanium gurney.

"Commander Mendoza," Dr. Navarro called out, shining a specialized diagnostic penlight into Lucía’s dilated pupils. "Severe peripheral neuropathy, alopecia along the nape, horizontal white Mees' lines across all ten fingernails. The clinical presentation is unmistakable."

Gabriel stood over the bedside table. "What is it, Doctor?"

"Thallium sulfate," Dr. Navarro replied, his voice dropping into grave solemnity. "Odourless, colourless, completely water-soluble. It is known as the poison of kings and inheritance murderers. Administered in micro-doses over four to six months, it mimics progressive autoimmune decay and multi-organ failure. Had she signed that deed and remained in this room another forty-eight hours, she would have suffered irreversible cardiac arrest."

Doña Beatriz’s face drained of every drop of color. "That is absurd! Slanderous fabrication! Lucía has had a delicate constitution since childhood! I have personally prepared her organic chamomile and elderberry tea every morning with the finest natural botanicals!"

"Indeed you did, Doña Beatriz," Agent Valeria Sterling remarked, pulling a sterile evidence container from her kit. With stainless steel tweezers, she lifted the delicate, hand-painted porcelain teacup resting on the nightstand, along with the silver teapot on the service cart. "And our mobile infrared spectrometer has just flagged a lethal chemical residue lining the glaze of this exact porcelain cup."

Beatriz’s throat made a dry, clicking sound. "That cup was imported from Limoges! It proves nothing!"

"We will let the mass spectrometer at the Federal Forensic Institute determine what it proves," Agent Sterling answered coldly.

From the hallway, the sound of frantic, stumbling footsteps approached. Sebastián Valdivia—Lucía’s husband—rushed into the room, his tie undone, reeking of expensive Scotch and sweat.

"Mother! What is happening downstairs?! There are tactical vehicles blocking the main gates!" Sebastián shouted. He stopped dead upon seeing Gabriel, his eyes darting frantically toward the gurney where his wife lay. "Gabriel? What... what are you doing with Lucía?"

Gabriel slowly turned around. The raw, predatory rage in the commander's eyes made Sebastián instinctively retreat two paces until his back hit the doorframe.

"You knew," Gabriel said in a low, terrifying voice.

"Knew what?!" Sebastián stammered, raising his hands in defensive panic. "Lucía is sick! I just returned from the maritime port! I’ve been working day and night to keep the shipping contracts running while she’s bedridden!"

Lucía lifted her head slightly from the gurney, her vision clearing under the emergency oxygen flow. She looked at the man she had loved for four years—the man who had watched her lose her hair, watched her hands shake, and repeatedly urged her to sign management of her inheritance over to his mother.

"You never loved me, Sebastián," Lucía whispered, tears cutting clean paths through the grey pallor of her cheeks. "You were just waiting for me to stop breathing."
