Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Doña Beatriz

Seventy-two hours after the raid, Doña Beatriz Valdivia was escorted into Courtroom 3 of the Supreme Court of San Lorenzo for her emergency detention hearing.

Gone was the imperious matriarch who had ruled high society with diamond-clad fingers and sharp, condescending smiles. Her tailored designer wardrobe had been replaced by a coarse grey inmate jumpsuit; her styled silver hair was disheveled, and her wrists and ankles were secured with heavy steel transport chains.

Her high-priced private defense attorneys sat beside her, but their faces were pale, their desks cluttered with the catastrophic weight of the state's unsealed evidence.

Chief Magistrate Judge Horacio Morales took the bench, his expression severe and uncompromising.

"The court has reviewed the preliminary forensic evidence submitted by the Federal Medical Task Force and the Anti-Corruption Bureau," Judge Morales declared, his voice echoing through the crowded, tense courtroom. "The physical and digital evidence against the defendant, Beatriz Valdivia, is overwhelming, horrifying, and unassailable."

Beatriz’s lead counsel stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor, my client is a seventy-one-year-old woman of fragile health and prominent civic standing. We request immediate transfer to a private medical facility under house arrest on a five-million-dollar bond."

Prosecutor Valeria Sterling stood immediately, stepping to the center podium.

"The state vehemently opposes any form of bail or house arrest," Valeria argued, projecting her voice with absolute authority. "The defendant used her 'fragile health' and private residence as an execution chamber to poison her own daughter-in-law with heavy metal toxins. Furthermore, the state has unsealed forensic evidence connecting the defendant to the suspicious death of Don Carlos Valdivia and the systematic bribery of certified medical practitioners."

Valeria pointed directly at Beatriz.

"She represents an extraordinary flight risk and an active, lethal danger to society. She should remain in maximum-security federal custody until final sentencing."

Judge Morales brought his heavy oak gavel down with a thunderous crack that shook the courtroom.

"Bail is denied on all counts. The defendant is remanded to the Women's High-Security Penitentiary in Arica pending full trial."

Beatriz let out a strangled shriek, her knees buckling beneath her. "You cannot do this to a Valdivia! My family built this city! I am innocent!"

The federal marshals did not hesitate. They hoisted the weeping, screaming woman by her arms and dragged her through the reinforced side doors, her chains clanking loudly against the linoleum until the heavy iron door slammed shut behind her.
