Chapter 6 - VINCENT'S PERFECT STORY

Z
Vincent Rourke called a special meeting on Monday morning.
He arrived at the Falcone office in a charcoal suit and a look of practiced concern. Two department heads were already seated around the conference table, along with Daniel Mercer, Dominic's attorney.
Dominic entered last.
“Let's begin,” he said.
Vincent slid a report across the table.
“The seller wants confirmation by Friday. If we delay again, we risk losing the property and the foundation's investment.”
Daniel didn't touch the report.
“An independent review is underway.”
Vincent's expression hardened for an instant before his familiar smile returned.
“An investigation into what, exactly?”
“The acquisition's financial structure, the contractor payments, and the warehouse security records.”
“That sounds unnecessarily broad.”
“Then you should have no objection to a complete review.”
Vincent leaned back.
“This is about Clara, isn't it?”
Dominic's gaze sharpened.
“What about her?”
“She's been under strain. Everyone knows the gala ended badly. Now you're questioning business decisions that were approved months ago. I only hope you're not allowing personal emotions to cloud your judgment.”
Dominic stood.
“Do not use my wife's injury to avoid answering questions about your work.”
The room went silent.
Vincent's smile disappeared.
“I have served this family for fifteen years.”
“And your service is why you'll be given the opportunity to explain the records. Not why you'll be exempt from explaining them.”
Daniel opened a second folder.
“The contractor who performed the warehouse inspection received a payment from a shell company associated with one of the acquisition partners. The invoice was approved using credentials assigned to your office.”
Vincent looked down at the page.
“That doesn't prove I knew anything about it.”
“No,” Daniel agreed. “It proves we need to investigate.”
Dominic appreciated the distinction. Evidence first. Conclusions later.
Vincent pushed back his chair.
“This is a mistake.”
“Then the review will clear you.”
“And if it doesn't?”
Dominic met his eyes.
“Then we'll deal with what it finds.”
The meeting ended without a decision on the acquisition.
By afternoon, a local business reporter had called the office asking whether the waterfront deal was under investigation. Someone had leaked the existence of the review, though not its details.
Vincent's version spread faster.
He suggested that Dominic had become distracted by marital troubles. He hinted that Clara had been injured while interfering in business matters. By evening, an anonymous account online claimed that she had gone to Pier Forty-Four to steal company records.
Clara saw the post while sitting in her hotel room.
Her hands began to shake.
She called Rebecca.
“Can they publish that?”
“They can publish lies, unfortunately. That doesn't make them true. Save the post and don't respond publicly. I'll document it.”
“They're making me sound like a criminal.”
“I know. That's why we keep the record factual.”
Clara looked at the screen again. Her name was not mentioned directly, but the details were unmistakable.
She wanted to call Dominic and demand that he make it stop.
Then she remembered the promise she had made herself: she would not make her safety depend on his anger.
She let Rebecca handle the legal response and sent the hospital social worker a message asking about counseling appointments.
An hour later, Dominic called.
“I saw the post,” he said. “My attorneys are documenting it.”
“Please don't threaten the reporter.”
“I won't.”
“Don't send men to the office. Don't make a scene. I want the truth established, not another story about the Falcone family intimidating people.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“Yes.” His voice was tired. “I'm angry, Clara. But my anger doesn't give me the right to decide what happens to you.”
She said nothing for a moment.
“Thank you for saying that.”
After the call, Dominic issued a brief statement through counsel: the acquisition was under independent review, Clara had committed no known wrongdoing, and he would not discuss his wife's private medical information.
He did not mention the mafia, the warehouse, or his suspicions about Vincent.
He did not make Clara the center of a public spectacle.
The statement was deliberately boring.
For once, boring was exactly what they needed.
That night, Clara slept for five uninterrupted hours.
It was not enough to heal her ribs.
But it was enough to remind her that peace did not always arrive with a dramatic victory.
Sometimes it began with a man choosing not to make things worse.# SHE SMILED THROUGH THE GALA WALTZ
