Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO RAISED A KING

Antonio Falcone had never needed to raise his voice.

At seventy-one, he commanded rooms with silence.

He had helped build the Falcone organization when Miami's waterfront was still controlled by men who settled disputes with violence instead of contracts.

Dominic had spent his adult life moving the family's legitimate businesses away from those traditions.

Antonio had smiled through every reform.

Now Dominic wondered whether that smile had concealed contempt.

They met at Antonio's waterfront residence the following afternoon.

The old man poured espresso.

"Your wife caused quite a spectacle," he said.

"She's injured."

"So I heard."

"Vincent was involved."

Antonio's hand paused above his cup.

"That's a serious accusation."

"I have evidence."

"Evidence can be misunderstood."

Dominic watched him carefully.

"Then help me understand it."

Antonio sat.

For several minutes, they discussed shipping schedules and foundation finances.

Antonio offered explanations for every irregularity.

Administrative errors.

Poor oversight.

Overzealous accountants.

Then Dominic mentioned Mara Voss.

Antonio's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

"That woman stole from us," Antonio said.

"Did she?"

"Of course."

"Then why are payments still being made to an account in her name?"

Antonio looked at him.

Dominic placed a bank statement on the table.

The old man did not touch it.

"You're letting Clara fill your head with nonsense."

"Clara found the records."

"Clara doesn't understand our business."

"She understands accounting."

Antonio's eyes hardened.

"She understands what you allow her to understand."

Dominic stood.

"That ends today."

Antonio rose as well.

"You forget who taught you to survive."

"No," Dominic said. "I'm beginning to remember."

He left without finishing his coffee.

Back at the estate, Clara received another message from Rebecca Hale.

This time, it contained an address.

An abandoned coastal clinic north of Miami.

Rebecca claimed Mara was hiding there.

Clara wanted to go immediately.

Dominic refused to let her travel while she was injured.

For a moment, the old pattern returned.

He issued an order.

She stiffened.

He saw it.

And stopped.

"I'm doing it again," he said quietly.

Clara looked surprised.

"Doing what?"

"Deciding what's best for you without asking."

She said nothing.

Dominic sat across from her.

"I think it's dangerous. I think you need to recover. But I also know you have information I don't."

Clara studied him.

"What are you proposing?"

"We ask Rebecca to meet somewhere safe. We bring an attorney. You decide whether you want to attend."

Clara looked down at her hands.

For four years, she had loved a man who could command hundreds of employees with a phone call.

She had never asked him to stop being powerful.

She had only wanted him to remember that she was not one of his employees.

"That sounds reasonable," she said.

Dominic nodded.

It was a small moment.

But it was the first conversation they had finished without either of them feeling defeated.

That evening, Rebecca agreed to meet them at a private law office.

She also sent a photograph of Mara.

The woman looked older than her employment records suggested.

Her hair was gray.

Her face was thin.

But she was alive.

Clara showed Dominic.

He stared at the image.

"Why would Antonio keep paying her?"

Clara shook her head.

"Maybe he isn't."

She enlarged the account details.

The payments were not coming from Antonio.

They came from a trust established by Dominic's late father.

A trust Dominic had never known existed.

May you like

And its designated beneficiary was not Dominic.

It was Clara.
