Chapter 13 - THE TRIAL OF THE FALCONE EMPIRE

The trial began in early spring.

Miami's newspapers called it the most significant financial corruption case in the city's recent history.

Antonio faced charges related to fraud, conspiracy, and witness intimidation.

Commander Rourke faced separate proceedings.

Vincent entered a guilty plea to charges arising from the warehouse assault and his role in the financial scheme, subject to the court's sentencing process.

Dominic testified about the contracts he had signed and the information Antonio had concealed.

He acknowledged his failures in oversight.

He did not attempt to portray himself as innocent of every mistake.

Clara watched from the courtroom gallery.

For years, she had seen Dominic command rooms.

Now she watched him answer difficult questions under oath.

It required a different kind of courage.

When the prosecutor asked whether he had trusted Antonio, Dominic answered, "Completely."

"And do you regret that trust?"

Dominic paused.

"I regret refusing to question it when other people paid the price."

Clara lowered her eyes.

Later, she testified about Pier Forty-Four.

She described finding the financial records.

Vincent's threats.

The struggle on the staircase.

The pain.

The fear.

And the six days she had spent pretending nothing was wrong.

The defense questioned her motives.

Suggested she wanted control of the foundation.

Implied she had misunderstood business documents.

Clara remained composed.

When asked why she had continued investigating despite the danger, she answered:

"Because the money was supposed to help sick children. Someone had to care where it went."

The courtroom fell quiet.

Dominic looked at his wife.

He had always known she was intelligent.

He had never fully appreciated how brave she could be without needing anyone to rescue her.

Mara Voss testified next.

Her financial records corroborated the fraudulent transfers.

Rebecca described the warehouse confrontation.

Grant Mercer confirmed the deletion of surveillance footage.

By the end of the trial, the prosecution had presented a substantial case.

The jury returned guilty verdicts against Antonio on multiple counts.

Sentencing was scheduled for a later date.

The court also referred additional evidence for investigation into unresolved matters, including the circumstances surrounding Dominic's father's death.

Dominic did not celebrate.

He simply walked outside with Clara.

Reporters shouted questions.

Cameras flashed.

Dominic ignored them.

At the courthouse steps, Clara slipped her hand into his.

He looked down.

"Are you okay?"

She considered the question.

"Not completely."

He nodded.

"Me neither."

She squeezed his hand.

May you like

"But I think we will be."

For the first time, Dominic believed her.
