Chapter 10 - THE PRICE OF SILENCE

For ten minutes, Clara could not speak.

Sophie was supposed to be safe.

She had spoken to her sister only hours earlier.

Dominic contacted the investigators.

The bracelet was photographed, examined, and logged as evidence.

Then Sophie was reached at her protected location.

She was unharmed.

Her bracelet, however, was missing.

Someone had taken it from her apartment before she left.

The threat was psychological.

A reminder that Antonio's people had been close enough to touch her belongings.

Clara sat at the kitchen table, staring at the photograph.

"He wants me to stop."

Dominic nodded.

"Yes."

"Do you think he'll hurt her?"

"I think he's capable of it."

Clara closed her eyes.

"Then what do we do?"

"We let the investigators handle him."

She looked surprised.

A year earlier, Dominic would have answered differently.

He would have sent men.

Made threats.

Demanded obedience.

Now he understood that protecting Clara meant refusing to become another danger she had to survive.

Meanwhile, Vincent contacted Antonio from a hotel in the Bahamas.

He was furious.

"You said Dominic would protect me."

Antonio's voice was cold.

"Dominic has become sentimental."

"He knows about the warehouse."

"Then you should have handled the situation properly."

Vincent stared at the phone.

For the first time, he realized that Antonio viewed him as disposable.

"What happens if they arrest me?"

"You remain loyal."

"And if I don't?"

Antonio paused.

"Then you discover how little your brother can do for you."

The call ended.

Vincent sat alone for hours.

He had spent his entire life competing with Dominic.

His brother inherited the authority.

The respect.

The admiration.

Vincent received compliments that always sounded like consolation prizes.

Antonio had exploited that resentment.

He promised Vincent a future in which Dominic would finally recognize his importance.

Instead, Vincent had become the man everyone blamed.

That night, Vincent called Naomi Pierce.

"I want to negotiate."

Naomi asked what he could offer.

"Everything."

The next morning, Vincent returned to Miami under an arrangement coordinated with investigators.

He surrendered his phone, financial records, and correspondence with Antonio.

He also admitted assaulting Clara.

Dominic was informed before the interview.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then he asked one question.

"Does Clara have to see him?"

"No," Naomi replied.

"Good."

Vincent's testimony revealed that Antonio had planned to frame Clara for the missing hospital funds.

Her forged signature was supposed to provide the evidence.

Once Dominic believed his wife had betrayed him, Antonio intended to persuade him to remove her from the foundation and surrender the trust documents.

But Clara's injuries complicated the plan.

And Dominic's decision to stop the gala had brought attention to a situation Antonio expected to remain private.

Vincent lowered his head during the interview.

"I thought Dominic would believe me."

Naomi asked why.

Vincent's answer was simple.

"Because he always believed family."

When Dominic heard that statement, he finally understood the cruelest part of the betrayal.

Vincent had not merely counted on his brother's loyalty.

He had counted on Dominic trusting him more than his own wife.
