Chapter 12 - THE LETTER HE NEVER SENT

Two months passed.
Clara's ribs healed.
The bruises faded.
She returned to work with the hospital foundation's independent oversight committee, now operating under new leadership.
Dominic continued cooperating with investigators.
Several of his companies underwent audits.
Some contracts were suspended.
Others were terminated permanently.
He sold his interest in businesses connected to Antonio's network and established new compliance procedures for the legitimate shipping operation.
The changes were expensive.
Painful.
And necessary.
Clara noticed that he no longer measured every decision by how much power it preserved.
Sometimes he made choices simply because they were right.
One afternoon, she found a letter in the desk drawer of their waterfront house.
It was addressed to her.
Unsent.
She recognized Dominic's handwriting.
She should have left it alone.
Instead, she opened it.
Clara,
I keep trying to remember the exact moment I failed you.
Was it the night you called and I said I was too busy?
Was it when I allowed Vincent to speak for me?
Was it every time I told you not to worry instead of giving you the truth?
I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the dangerous parts of my life.
Now I understand that secrecy didn't protect you. It left you alone with dangers you couldn't name.
I don't know whether you'll ever feel safe beside me again.
But I want you to know that I am changing because I was wrong, not because I expect a reward.
If you leave, I will still be grateful that you showed me what I refused to see.
And if you stay, I will spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to disappear inside our marriage again.
Dominic.
Clara sat quietly for a long time.
When Dominic came home, she was waiting.
He saw the letter on the table.
His face changed.
"I wasn't going to give you that."
"Why not?"
"Because I didn't want it to feel like pressure."
Clara stood.
"I needed to read it."
He looked uncertain.
She approached him.
"I've spent months wondering whether you understood what happened to me."
"I know."
"No," she said gently. "I don't think you did. Not at first."
Dominic nodded.
"You're right."
"But you do now."
His eyes filled.
Clara took his hand.
"I'm not ready to pretend everything is perfect."
"I don't want you to."
"I still get frightened sometimes."
"I know."
"And there may be days when I need space."
"You can have it."
She stepped closer.
"But I don't want a separation."
Dominic closed his eyes.
When he opened them, Clara was smiling through tears.
"I want to try again."
He touched her cheek.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
He kissed her forehead.
Then her cheek.
Then, when she leaned toward him, her lips.
There were no chandeliers.
No audience.
May you like
No music.
Only two people choosing to begin again.
