Chapter 9 - THE MESSAGE FROM BOSTON

Sophie Whitmore called Clara at 6:42 the next morning.

Her voice was shaking.

"Clara, I think someone followed me home."

Clara sat upright.

"Where are you?"

"At my apartment."

"Lock the door."

"I already did."

"Call the police."

"I did. They're sending someone."

Dominic entered the room as Clara switched to speakerphone.

Sophie described a dark sedan parked outside her workplace.

The same vehicle had appeared near her apartment.

Then someone had left an envelope beneath her door.

Inside was a photograph of Clara's wedding.

Across Dominic's face, someone had drawn a black line.

Beneath the photograph were the words:

Family debts are paid by family.

Dominic immediately contacted Naomi and the investigators.

Within hours, Sophie was relocated to a secure location with police assistance.

Clara tried to remain calm.

But after the call ended, she began to cry.

Not quietly.

Not elegantly.

She cried with the exhaustion of a woman who had spent weeks holding herself together.

Dominic knelt beside her chair.

He did not tell her to be strong.

He did not say everything would be fine.

He simply stayed.

"I'm so tired," Clara whispered.

"I know."

"I don't want to be brave anymore."

"Then don't be."

She looked at him through tears.

"Who am I supposed to be?"

"Whatever you need to be today."

Clara covered her face.

For the first time, she allowed herself to believe that he was learning.

That afternoon, Mara Voss agreed to testify.

Her statement confirmed that Antonio had controlled the fraudulent transactions and used Vincent to intimidate witnesses.

She also revealed something unexpected.

Vincent had not originally intended to hurt Clara.

He had been ordered to obtain the flash drive.

When Clara refused, he lost control.

Mara had seen him push Clara toward the staircase.

Clara struck the railing and fell several steps.

Rebecca had intervened.

Vincent threatened both women.

Then he ordered Grant to delete the footage.

The truth was ugly.

But it was finally clear.

Dominic listened to Mara's recorded testimony without speaking.

When it ended, he left the room.

Clara found him outside.

His hands were shaking.

"Dominic?"

He looked at her.

"I taught Vincent that consequences were something our family could avoid."

"You're not responsible for every choice he made."

"No. But I helped create the world where he thought he could make them."

Clara stood beside him.

"Then help change it."

He nodded.

The next morning, Dominic publicly resigned from the foundation's board pending the investigation.

He authorized independent audits of every company under his control.

And he announced that any employee who reported wrongdoing would receive legal protection.

The newspapers called it a desperate attempt to save his reputation.

Clara knew better.

For Dominic, it was the first time he had willingly surrendered power.

But Antonio was not finished.

That evening, a package arrived at Naomi's office.

Inside was a small silver bracelet.

Clara recognized it immediately.

It belonged to Sophie.

May you like

And attached to it was a note.

YOU SAVED THE WRONG SISTER.
